The MCA programme, duly sponsored by UGC, aims at producing human resources for software industry as increasing applications of computers in almost all areas of human endeavour has led to a vibrant industry with concurrent rapid change in technology.
The programme is spread over a period of three years consisting of six semesters. The students study courses for five semesters at the Institute and do a Software Development Project (SDP) in the sixth semester in top national and multi-national companies like TCS, Wipro, Infosys, DCM, Cadence, Hughes, etc.
The students with MCA degree are absorbed as software professionals, solution developers, system analysts in most reputed national and multi-national companies and other industrial/service organisations working in the field information technology field.

GP, SCP, STP, PHP – General, Scheduled Caste, Scheduled Tribes and Physically Handicapped candidates who have passed their qualifying (graduation) examination from the Universities/Colleges located in Punjab State/UT of Chandigarh.
GO, SCO, STO, PHO – General, Scheduled Caste, Schedules Tribes and Physically Handicapped candidates who have passed their qualifying (graduation) examination from the Indian Universities/Colleges located outside Punjab State/UT of Chandigarh.
Candidates of physically handicapped category are required to produce the Medical Certificate from the Chief Medical Officer of the District concerned, which should indicate the extent of disability in support of their claim. Minimum 40% disability is required to be eligible under this category. Further, the above provisions will be subject to the decision of the Admission Committee of the Institute whether such a candidate would be able to pursue the studies at the Institute with the specific disability. The decision of the Admission Committee in this regard shall be final.
If sufficient number of candidates belonging to (c), (d), (e), (f), (g) and (h) in above table are not available, the unutilized seats will be filled up by candidates belonging to (a) and (b) as per entrance examination merit on prorata basis. ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA
Recognised Bachelors degree of minimum 3 years duration in any discipline with Mathematics atleast at 10+2 school level and has also qualified in the Entrance Test to be conducted by the Institute.
OR
Recognised Bachelor’s Degree of minimum 3 years duration in any discipline with Mathematics as one of the subjects and has also qualified in the Entrance Test to be conducted by the Institute.
Candidates due to appear in the qualifying examination are also eligible to appear in the Entrance Examination. Such candidates will be placed provisonally in the merit list. They will not be considered for admission if they fail to submit proof of passing the qualifying examination.
NRI/FN/NRIS/FNS CANDIDATES
Seats for NRI/FN/NRIS/FNS will be over and above the sanctioned strength. The candidates seeking admission under this category having foreign qualification shall be required to furnish equivalence certificate of qualifying examination from AIU located in AIU House, 16 Kotla Marg, New Delhi, at the time of submission of completed application form.
The tuition fee and development fee for this category of students shall be 4200 US$ and 800 US$ per annum respectively. All other dues will be same as for other local students and can be paid either in US $ or in in Rupees currency .
The details of eligibility criteria, number of seats, etc. are detailed as under:
(a) NRI Candidates
5% (3) seats are reserved for the NRI candidates, i.e., who have passed the qualifying examination or its equivalent from abroad. The candidate must produce passport at the time of counselling.
Eligibility is:

15% (9) seats are reserved for the Foreign National candidates i.e. who have passed the qualifying examination or its equivalent and hold a valid foreign passport. The candidate must produce passport at the time of counselling.Out of these 15% seats, 5% seats (3) are reserved for the children of Indians working in Gulf region.
Eligibility is:
Minimum 60% marks in any recognized Bachelor’s Degree of minimum 3 years’ duration in any discipline with Mathematics at 10+2 school level
OR
Minimum 60% marks in any recognized Bachelor’s Degree of minimum 3 years’ duration in any discipline with Mathematics as one of the subjects.All FN candidates are required to deposit student visa endorsed to TIET.The VISA should be valid for the prescribed duration of the programme.
(c) NRIS/FNS Candidates
If the seats belonging to the FN & NRI categories at (a) and (b) are not filled up, the vacant seats shall be offered to the NRIS/FNS candidates having passed the qualifying examination or its equivalent from abroad/India.

The admissions will be made on the merit of the Entrance Test to be conducted by the Institute, provided that he/she:
Should have passed in any recognized Bachelor’s Degree of minimum 3 years duration in any discipline with Mathematics at 10+2 school level.
Or
Should have passed in any recognized Bachelor’s Degree of minimum 3 years duration in any discipline with Mathematics as one of the subjects.
The Cut-off merit of the Entrance Test under NRIS/FNS category will be decided by the Admission Committee of the Institute.
They are required to submit an affidavit from the sponsorer on the prescribed proforma appended with this brochure at Annexure-V or Annexure-VI (as applicable).
Admission Procedure
Candidates should apply for admission on the prescribed form which is supplied with the Information Brochure, duly filled in their own handwriting, latest by stipulated dates.
Admission to Master of Computer Applications Programme will be made by the Admission Committee appointed by the Chairman, Senate. The admission against the sanctioned number of seats will be made on the basis of merit based on the Entrance Examination to be conducted by the university at Patiala and Delhi.
The admission for the seats reserved for Non-Resident Indian, Foreign National, Non-Resident Indian sponsored/Foreign National sponsored category will be made as per criteria laid down in the preceding section.
Provisional certificate from any authority whosoever will not be accepted on any grounds.
Candidates called for interview on a particular date shall report at 9.00 A.M. in the Auditorium of the Institute. A candidate who reports late will be offered seat, if available, at that time.
If a candidate does not receive the admit card by 05.6.2007 he/she should contact the Registrar of the university for issue of duplicate admit card. He/she should bring with him/her one passport size photograph.
A candidate who either does not seek admission on a particular date as per counselling/admission schedule or fails to attend counselling will also be eligible for admission in order of merit in the subsequent round of admission as per counselling/admission schedule.
Candidates must be medically fit and must bring alongwith them a medical fitness certificate signed by Gazetted Medical Officer at the time of admission on the prescribed proforma as per Annexure-IV failing which they will not be considered for admission.
All candidates must produce certificate of migration within a month of enrolment.
REFUND OF FEE
In case a student leaves the university a day before the registration date Rs. 15000/- will be deducted.
In case a student leaves the university a day before the second counselling, he/she will be refunded the balance amount after deduction of Rs. 25000/- from the total fees deposited by him/her.
In case a student leaves the university after the second(final) counselling, he/she will be refunded only the Institute security, caution money and alumni fee.
All outstanding dues will, however, be recovered before such refund is made.

SUBMISSION OF APPLICATION
1. The application form complete in all respects should reach the Registrar by 5.00 P.M. on 28.5.2007. However the application form can be submitted by 5.00 P.M. on 4.6.2007 with late fee. Incomplete application forms and those received after the prescribed date will not be entertained under any circumstances. No correspondence/enquiry from such candidates shall be entertained.
The form can be down loaded from the website (www.tiet.ac.in) and must be accompanied by a crossed Demand Draft of Rs. 1000/- drawn in favour of Registrar TU, payable at Patiala in addition to the examination fee of Rs 1000/-.
2. Application must be accompanied by a crosed Bank Draft of Rs. 1000/- as Examination fee drawn in favour of the Registrar, Thapar University, Patiala and payable at Patiala, and
(a) One passport size photograph pasted on the application form in the space provided for the purpose.
(b) Two passport size photographs pasted on the entrance examination admit card for the purpose.
(c) If a candidate wishes to claim an advantage of belonging to Scheduled Caste/Tribe, he/she is required to submit certificate as per format in annexure II.
3. Entrance Examination
The entrance examination consists of one paper of three hours duration consisting of following sections:
(i) Mathematics
(ii) Computer Awareness
(iii) General Knowledge /Analytical Ability
4. Selection Procedure :
(i) The interse merit of the candidates securing equal marks in the entrance exmination will be determined with the following criteria.
(a) Candidate senior in age shall rank higher in order of merit.
(b) In the case of a tie in age also, a candidate getting higher percentage of marks in the qualifying examination shall rank higher in order of merit.
(ii) The Admission Committee will prepare a merit list of candidates on the basis of their performance in the Entrance Examination. Candidates in the merit list will be called for interview. The candidates will be required to produce original certificates, marks sheets, degree and other documents at the time of interview. In all cases the decision of the Admission Committee shall be final and binding on the candidates.
(iii) The Admission Committee reserves the right to disqualify any candidate at any stage if it is found that the candidate does not fully meet any of the eligibility requirements/ there is misrepresentation of the facts.
5. Each candidate will be supplied Entrance Examination Card as an authority for admission to the examination centre. The candidate shall be admitted to the examination only on production of the same.

Syllabus for MCA Entrance Examination
Section-I: Mathematics
1. Geometry: Two-Dimentional; straight lines, circles and conic sections, Three-Dimensional; straight lines and spheres.
2. Algebra: Sets theory, Relations, Mappings and its applications, Permutations and Combinations, Bionomial Theorem, Complex numbers and their properties: Demoivre’s theorem and its applications.
3. Calculus: Limits, Continuity and Differentiability, Rolle’s and Mean value theorems, Differentiation, Partial Differentiation, Maxima and Minima of functions of one and two variable. Successive differentiation. Integration by using substitution, partial fraction and by parts, Definite integral and its properties, Applications of definite integral to evaluate length and are of simple plane curves.
4. Vector Analysis: Scalar and vector products including their applications.
5. Statistics, Probability and Linear Programming: Measures of Central tendency, Dispersion, Skewness and Kurtosis. Correlation and Regression. Basic concepts of probability, Conditional probability, Baye’s theorem, Discrete and continuous distributions (Binomial, Poisson, and normal distributions), Fundamentals of linear programming problems, Graphical solution, Simplex method and its variants.
6. Matrices: Types of matrices, rank of a matrix, solution of system of linear equations, Cayley Hamilton theorem, Inverse of a matrix, Determinant and its properties.
7. Ordinary Differential Equations: Differential equations of first order and their solutions, Linear differential equations of first and higher order with constant coefficients.
8. Numerical Analysis: Solution of non-linear equations using iterative methods, Interpolation (Newton’s, Lagrange’s and Forward formulae), Numerical Integration (Trapezoid and Simpson Rule).Section-II: Computer Awareness
o Computer Basics: Organization of a computer, Central Processing Unit (CPU), Structure of instructions in CPU, input/output devices, computer memory, memory organization, back-up devices.
o Data Representation: Representation of characters, integers, and fractions, binary and hexadecimal representations, Binary Arithmetic: Addition, subtraction, division, multiplication, floating point representation of numbers, normalized floating point representation, Boolean algebra: truth tables, Venn diagrams.
o Computer Architecture: Block structure of computers, communications between processor and I/O devices, interrupts.
o Computer Language and Operating Systems: Flow charts and algorithms, Concepts of low level and high level languages, Computer programming in C (data types, loop and control statements, functions), Fundamentals of operating systems: multiprogramming, multitasking and time sharing systems.
Section-III: General Knowledge/Analytical Ability:
The question in this section will cover logical reasoning, quantitative reasoning, visual-spatial reasoning and also this section shall carry questions to test the general awareness about business, finance, industry, transportation, scientific inventions, information technology, governance, healthcare and cultural dimensions etc.General Information Regarding MCA Entrance Examination
There will be 1 paper of 3 hours duration consisting of three sections as under :
